2008 Match Play Championships - Ongoing

Now at the halfway point of the round robin stage of this year’s championship, 23 matches have been played with 32 still remaining. Once the round robin stage is completed by 25 May, the top 2 of each grouping will move forward to play the quarter finals of which the winners move to the semifinals and the remaining 2 players along with the 2 ladies finalist will play off for the championship on Sunday 8 June 2008. This will be held in conjunction with the Pairs Scramble member’s tournament. Please see details below.

Entry at Pro Shop via entry form.
Tee times 11.30am - 2.00pm

(Maximum field is 60 players or 30 teams). Open to members and their guests only. THB1500 for members and THB2500 for guests. Non-golfers dinner will be charged at THB700.

Entry forms are available in the Pro Shop or email passakornr@lagunaphuket.com for more information. So get a partner and enter by Thursday 5 June 2008.

Match Play participants may join this event with only caddy fee payable. You will still need to complete and submit an entry form to the Pro Shop.

MEMBERS AFFILIATE CLUB PROGRAMME – RPM HEALTH CLUB

Located in the Royal Phuket Marina, the new RPM Health Club has recently joined the IMG Sports Club program and is considered to be Phuket's premier health and wellness club. Laguna Phuket Golf Club Members now have access to RPM Health Club between April and October 2008 at a guest rate of 600 THB per person per visit when you show your membership card.

Members Handicaps – Online access

With immediate effect, Members may now go online and check their most up to date handicap information. Managed by Northern Systems Inc, this service is free of charge and can be accessed in the Member's Handicap section.

Once on the Laguna Phuket Golf Clubs home page, scroll down the menu bar on the left hand side and click “Members Handicap” then click the “Access the LPGC eHandicap Network” link located in the center of this page. All handicaps are listed in alphabetical order or you can type in you name at the bottom of the page to go directly to your details. More features of this service will be highlighted in future newsletters.

LAUREATE COURSE STATUS

Laguna Phuket Golf Club was recently awarded and IGOLF Laureate course status by the International Life & Golf Foundation. The International Golf and Life Foundation (IGOLF) is a not-for-profit organization registered in Bern, Switzerland. IGOLF’s mission is to establish norms of excellence based on environmental and social responsibility for golf courses around the world.

“Laguna Phuket is an example of a golf club which takes both its environmental and social responsibilities seriously, with a variety of innovative actions,” said IGOLF Chairman Paul Sochaczewski.

SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER

Most greens have recovered quite well from their latest renovation considering the adverse weather conditions. Greens 11, 12, 13, 14 and 17 will need some short term special attention to repair deep scarring which occurred during the verti-cutting process. All greens will receive a light dusting (topdressing) in the coming weeks to further improve green speed, ball roll and playability.

DIRECTOR OF GOLF CORNER

Earlier in this newsletter we have made mention of the new eHandicap service allowing members of the club to access their handicaps online. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the important steps members need to take in maintain a USGA Handicap Index.

1. All 18 hole rounds, good or bad should be submitted for handicapping to the club.
2. Cards at the time of submission should be clearly marked with the name of the player, the date of play, the tees you played from and one other signature of your playing partner. If the card is not from Laguna, please ensure the “slope Rating” is indicated.
3. Scores must be written very clearly as any card where a number or numbers can not be deciphered will be discarded.  
4. A golfer should only ever maintain one handicap. This handicap should be kept where he or she plays most of their golf. Rounds played at other clubs should be sent in at least once a month via post addressed to the Director of Golf or the Handicap Manager of the club that maintains their handicap. Submitting cards to multiple clubs only dilutes your true handicap and may cause you problems when forced to play off the lowest handicap for club events.

As your golfing ability changes, so along with it should your handicap. As handicapping is a relevant and important part of playing golf, I am more that happy to take time out to answer any handicap related questions you may have, so please do not hesitate to drop me an email or come by the club for a coffee.
